Description

Methyl [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyrate, often abbreviated as PCBM, is a derivative of fullerene C60, a molecule composed of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a cage-like structure. PCBM is widely used as an electron acceptor material due to its high electron mobility, good electron affinity, and suitable energy levels for efficient charge transfer and separation in organic photovoltaic devices. When blended with a conjugated polymer acting as the electron donor, such as poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), PCBM forms an active layer in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells. In this configuration, PCBM helps to facilitate the dissociation of photogenerated excitons into free charge carriers and enhances the collection of electrons at the cathode, contributing to the overall efficiency of the solar cell.
