Near-Infrared (NIR) Light-Excitable Upconversion Nanoparticles are a type of nanomaterial that can absorb low-energy NIR light and emit higher-energy visible or ultraviolet (UV) light through an upconversion process. UCNPs are used as contrast agents for bioimaging techniques, including fluorescence microscopy, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and in vivo imaging. Their ability to emit visible or UV light upon NIR excitation enables deep tissue penetration and reduced autofluorescence background, making them ideal for imaging in biological samples. They can also be employed for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) applications. NIR light excitation of UCNPs can trigger the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or heat, which can selectively destroy cancer cells or pathogens while sparing surrounding healthy tissues.
