Oil Dispersible Upconverting Nanoparticles (Oil Dispersible UCNPs) are typically surface-modified with hydrophobic ligands or coatings. These modifications render the UCNPs lipophilic and enable them to disperse stably in oil-based solutions. They are often used as contrast agents in imaging applications, such as bioimaging and fluorescence microscopy. Their ability to emit visible or UV light upon exposure to near-infrared (NIR) light makes them valuable for deep-tissue imaging, where NIR light can penetrate tissues more effectively.
