Biocytin (ε-Biotinoyl-L-Lysine) is a naturally occurring molecule that consists of biotin covalently linked to lysine via an amide bond. Biocytin is widely used as a neuronal tracer in neuroscience research to study neuronal morphology and connectivity. Neurons take up biocytin via endocytosis, and subsequently, biocytin can be visualized and traced using immunohistochemical techniques. This approach allows researchers to map neuronal circuits, investigate synaptic connections, and study neuroplasticity in both in vitro and in vivo models.
