DSPE-SS-PEG-Biotin (Phospholipids-Disulfide Bonds-Polyethylene Glycol-Biotin) is structured with DSPE as the lipid anchor, a PEG spacer (which may vary in length), a disulfide bond for cleavability, and biotin as the terminal functional group. DSPE is a phospholipid derivative commonly used in liposome formulations. It consists of a lipid tail (distearoyl) and a polar head group (phosphoethanolamine). SS represents a disulfide bond (-SS-) which is a covalent bond between two sulfur atoms. Disulfide bonds are cleavable under reducing conditions, making them useful for controlled release or activation. PEG is a hydrophilic polymer composed of repeating ethylene glycol units. PEGylation improves stability, solubility, and pharmacokinetic properties of biomolecules and lipid-based carriers. Biotin (Vitamin B7) is a small molecule that binds specifically and with high affinity to streptavidin or avidin proteins. It serves as a tag for detection, purification, or immobilization of biotinylated molecules.
