(R)-(-)-Camptothecin ((R)-4-Ethyl-4-hydroxy-1H-pyrano[3’,4’:6,7]indolizino[1,2-b]quinoline-3,14(4H,12H)-dione / (R)-(-)-Camptothecine / (R)-Camptothecin / 20R-Camptothecin) is a naturally occurring alkaloid derived from the Chinese tree Camptotheca acuminata. It is well-known for its potent antineoplastic (anti-cancer) activity. The compound has a unique mechanism of action, primarily targeting DNA topoisomerase I, an enzyme crucial for DNA replication and transcription. (R)-(-)-Camptothecin targets and inhibits DNA topoisomerase I, preventing DNA replication and transcription, leading to cell death. This makes it a potent anticancer agent.
