3′-epi-Daunorubicin ((8S-cis)-8-acetyl-10-[(3-amino-2,3,6-trideoxy-α-L-xylo-hexopyranosyl)oxy]-7,8,9,10-tetrahydro-6,8,11-trihydroxy-1-methoxy-5,12-naphthacenedione / 3′-Epidaunorubicin / 3′-epi-Daunomycin / WP 711) is an epimer of daunorubicin, an anthracycline antibiotic with a tetracyclic ring structure and a sugar moiety. 3′-epi-Daunorubicin intercalates into DNA, inhibiting topoisomerase II and preventing DNA replication. This leads to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of cancer cells. Besides, studying how the 3′-epi modification affects the compound’s interaction with DNA and its overall pharmacological properties helps in optimizing drug design for improved efficacy and reduced side effects.
