Biotin alkyne refers to a chemical compound that combines biotin with an alkyne functional group. Biotin, also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H, is a water-soluble vitamin essential for various metabolic processes, including carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. It is also widely used in biochemical applications as a molecular probe due to its strong and specific binding to avidin and streptavidin. The alkyne group features a carbon-carbon triple bond and is highly reactive. It is particularly useful in click chemistry, where it can undergo copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) to form stable triazole rings. Biotin-Alkyne is used in bioorthogonal labeling where the alkyne group allows for selective and specific labeling of biomolecules in living cells or organisms. The biotin component binds to streptavidin or avidin, which can be tagged with imaging agents or fluorescent dyes for visualization.
