Description

SA-β-gal (Senescence-associated beta-galactosidase) is a variant of β-galactosidase that exhibits enzymatic activity at a more acidic pH compared to the standard β-galactosidase. The primary method for detecting SA-β-gal activity involves staining with a substrate such as X-gal. In the presence of SA-β-gal, X-gal is hydrolyzed to produce a blue precipitate, allowing visualization of senescent cells under a microscope. SA-β-gal staining is widely used to study cellular aging and to understand the role of senescent cells in aging processes and age-related diseases. Besides, SA-β-gal activity is used to identify and evaluate compounds that can modulate cellular senescence. This is important for developing drugs aimed at targeting senescent cells or the senescence process.
