Description

NaGdF4-tetrazine (NaGdF4-Tz) can be used as MRI contrast agents due to the paramagnetic properties of gadolinium ions. The presence of tetrazine groups allows for specific targeting of the nanoparticles to biomolecules of interest, improving the specificity and contrast of MRI images. This is particularly useful in detecting tumors, inflammation, or other pathological changes in tissues. When doped with appropriate lanthanide ions, these nanoparticles can convert near-infrared light to visible light via upconversion processes. This property is beneficial for bioimaging applications, as near-infrared light penetrates deeper into tissues with lower background autofluorescence. Tetrazine functionalization allows for targeted imaging of specific cells or tissues by bioorthogonal labeling with strained dienophiles.
