Description

Azide-functionalized gelatin allows gelatin to participate in bioorthogonal click chemistry reactions, such as the strain-promoted alkyne-azide cycloaddition (SPAAC) and copper-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC). Gelatin is a natural, biocompatible protein derived from collagen, which is commonly obtained from animal sources like bovine or porcine skin and bones. It is widely used in biomedical applications due to its biodegradability, biocompatibility, and ability to form hydrogels. Gelatin consists of various amino acids, including glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, which contribute to its gel-forming properties. Azide-functionalized gelatin can be used to create hydrogels via click chemistry reactions. When mixed with alkyne-functionalized polymers or molecules, a rapid and efficient crosslinking reaction can occur, forming a stable hydrogel network. These hydrogels are useful in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine as scaffolds for cell growth and tissue formation due to their tunable mechanical properties and biocompatibility.
