Description

Azidothymidine (AZT) functions by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which is crucial for the replication of HIV. This drug is also known by its chemical name, 3′-Azido-3′-deoxythymidine, reflecting its structure as a thymidine analog modified with an azido group. AZT works by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which HIV uses to convert its RNA into DNA—a necessary step for viral replication within human cells. By incorporating into the viral DNA during reverse transcription, AZT causes premature termination of the DNA chain, effectively halting the replication process. AZT is often used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs as part of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) to manage HIV infection. Combination therapy reduces the likelihood of the virus developing resistance to any single drug, thereby improving the effectiveness of the treatment.
