Description

PMA (Propidium Monoazide) is a membrane-impermeable dye that selectively binds to double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). PMA is a derivative of propidium iodide (PI) and features an azide group, which allows it to form a covalent bond with DNA upon photoactivation with light (typically UV). This unique feature makes PMA a valuable tool for differentiating between live and dead cells in microbiology and molecular biology. When exposed to light, the azide group in PMA reacts with nucleic acids, causing cross-linking and effectively preventing DNA from being amplified by PCR or other amplification methods.
