p-Azido-l-phenylalanine (AzF) is a non-canonical amino acid that contains an azide functional group attached to the para position of the phenyl ring of L-phenylalanine. AzF can be genetically encoded into proteins at specific sites using orthogonal tRNA/synthetase pairs. This site-specific incorporation allows researchers to introduce unique chemical functionalities into proteins without affecting their native structure and function. In addition, AzF enables the incorporation of diverse chemical groups into proteins, such as fluorophores, biotin, or therapeutic agents.
