Description

17α-Ethinylestradiol (EE2) is a synthetic estrogen commonly used in oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapies. It is a derivative of estradiol, the primary female sex hormone, with an ethynyl group added to the 17α position. EE2 is commonly used in combination with a progestin in oral contraceptives. It works by inhibiting ovulation, altering the cervical mucus to prevent sperm entry, and modifying the endometrium to reduce the likelihood of implantation. EE2 is also used in hormone replacement therapy to alleviate symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and osteoporosis. It helps maintain estrogen levels when natural production decreases.
