Description

3-(N-Maleimidopropionyl)biocytin can selectively label proteins or peptides that contain exposed cysteine residues. The maleimide group reacts specifically with sulfhydryl groups on cysteine residues under mild conditions, forming stable conjugates. The N-maleimidopropionyl group consists of a maleimide functional group attached to a propionic acid linker, which in turn is attached to biocytin. Maleimide groups are reactive towards thiol groups (-SH), forming stable thioether bonds. Biocytin is a modified form of biotin, a water-soluble B-complex vitamin (vitamin B7). It consists of a tetrahydroimidizalone ring structure linked to a valeric acid side chain. Biocytin includes an additional lysine residue attached via an amide bond to the valeric acid side chain of biotin.
