5-Ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (5-EdU / EdU / 2′-deoxy-5-Ethynyluridine) is a nucleoside analog where the ethynyl group replaces the methyl group in thymidine. EdU is incorporated into DNA during active synthesis, allowing researchers to monitor cell proliferation and DNA replication by detecting the ethynyl group with click chemistry-based fluorescent or chemiluminescent assays. By labeling cells with EdU, researchers can distinguish cells in the S phase of the cell cycle from those in other phases, aiding in cell cycle studies and cancer research.
