Description

Ac4GalNAz is a modified sugar analog of N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc), where the acetyl group is replaced with an azide group. Ac4GalNAz is widely used to label glycans on glycoproteins and glycolipids within living cells. Once the acetyl groups are removed by esterases, GalNAz is metabolically incorporated into glycans. This enables specific labeling of glycoproteins and glycolipids that can be visualized using azide-alkyne click chemistry. In cell surfaces or biological samples where copper might cause toxicity, SPAAC offers a copper-free alternative. The azide group of Ac4GalNAz-labeled glycans reacts with cyclooctynes to form a covalent bond, enabling bioorthogonal conjugation without the need for metal catalysts.
