(-)-Anatoxin A ((1S)-1-(9-Azabicyclo[4.2.1]non-2-en-2-yl)-ethanone / 9-Azabicyclo[4.2.1]nonane Ethanone deriv.) is a bicyclic alkaloid with a complex structure featuring a nitrogen atom within a bicyclic ring system. It is a colorless to light yellow crystalline solid. Its solubility in water is relatively low, but it is soluble in organic solvents. (-)-Anatoxin A acts as a potent neurotoxin by mimicking the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It binds to acetylcholine receptors (nicotinic type) in the nervous system, causing excessive stimulation. (-)-Anatoxin A is used to study the mechanisms by which neurotoxins interact with acetylcholine receptors.
