Benzo[a]pyrene-9,10-diol (9,10-Dihydroxybenzo[a]pyrene) is a metabolite of benzo[a]pyrene, a well-known polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that is widely studied for its role in environmental pollution and carcinogenesis. Benzo[a]pyrene-9,10-diol is an important intermediate in the metabolic activation of benzo[a]pyrene. It is formed through the enzymatic activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes and can further be oxidized to form highly reactive epoxides that bind to DNA, leading to mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. The diol can react with DNA to form adducts, which are critical in understanding how benzo[a]pyrene induces cancer. Studying these adducts helps elucidate the mechanisms of carcinogenesis.
