Description

Biotin-X-C5-maleimide (N-(biotinoyl)-N’-(iodoacetyl)ethylenediamine) is used to label proteins or peptides that contain exposed cysteine residues. The maleimide group selectively reacts with these cysteine residues, enabling site-specific biotinylation. Biotin is a vitamin B complex (vitamin B7) that plays a crucial role in various metabolic pathways. It is characterized by its ability to bind strongly to avidin and streptavidin proteins, forming one of the strongest non-covalent bonds known in nature. Maleimide group is a reactive functional group (-C=C-C(=O)-NH-) that specifically reacts with sulfhydryl groups (-SH) of cysteine residues in proteins and peptides, forming stable thioether bonds.
