C8IC is incorporated into the active layer of bulk heterojunction organic solar cells as the electron acceptor material. When blended with a suitable electron donor material (such as a conjugated polymer), C8IC forms a nanoscale interpenetrating network structure. This structure facilitates efficient exciton dissociation, charge transfer, and charge transport, leading to the generation of electricity from sunlight. C8IC-based organic solar cells have the potential to be used in various applications, including portable electronics, off-grid power generation, and building-integrated photovoltaics.
