Description

Cholesterol-PEG-MAL (Cholesterol-PEG-Maleimide, CLS-PEG-MAL, Cholesterol-poly(ethylene glycol) with conjugated maleimide) reacts with thiol-containing molecules through the thiol-maleimide reaction. Cholesterol is a cell membrane constituent which serves a unique function of modulating membrane fluidity, elasticity, and permeability. It fills in the gaps created by packing of other lipid species when proteins are embedded in the membrane. PEGylated cholesterol as an amphiphilic lipid derivative can be used to prepare liposome and other micelles as drug delivery systems. The functional group such as maleimide is used to conjugate thiol-containing moieties including protein, antibody and dyes on micelle or liposome surface.
