D-Desthiobiotin-PEG8-Maleimide is often used to label proteins or peptides that contain accessible sulfhydryl (-SH) groups. The maleimide group reacts specifically with these sulfhydryl groups under mild conditions, forming a stable thioether bond. The biotin group attached to the maleimide facilitates downstream detection and purification using streptavidin or avidin, which bind strongly to biotin.
