Description

Diazidomethane is an organic compound with the formula CH₂(N₃)₂, consisting of a methane core where two hydrogen atoms are replaced by azide groups. Diazidomethane can be used in diazo transfer reactions, where it converts a suitable substrate, often a ketone or an aldehyde, into a diazo compound. Diazo compounds are valuable intermediates in organic synthesis due to their ability to form carbenes, which can then participate in a variety of chemical transformations such as cyclopropanation, insertions, and Wolff rearrangement. Additionally, due to the presence of the azide groups, diazidomethane and its derivatives are considered for applications in energetic materials. The high nitrogen content and the release of nitrogen gas upon decomposition make these compounds potential candidates for explosives or propellants, although the extreme sensitivity of diazidomethane limits its direct application.
