Description

DM4 (Ravtansine) is a potent cytotoxic agent that belongs to the maytansinoid family of compounds, which are derived from natural sources, particularly the Maytenus genus of plants. DM4 exerts its cytotoxic effects by disrupting microtubule assembly, leading to cell cycle arrest and ultimately inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death). This mechanism makes it a promising candidate for cancer therapy, particularly in the development of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). In ADCs, DM4 is conjugated to monoclonal antibodies that specifically recognize antigens expressed on cancer cells. The antibody serves as a targeting moiety, directing the cytotoxic payload to the cancer cells while sparing normal cells, thus reducing systemic toxicity and improving therapeutic efficacy.
