Electrospun Polylactic Acid Micro/Nanofibers can be functionalized with sensing elements such as nanoparticles or polymers to create sensors for various analytes, including gases, chemicals, and biological molecules. The high surface area and porosity of the fibers enhance sensing capabilities by increasing surface interactions between the analyte and sensing elements. Besides, the fine diameter and high surface area of electrospun PLA fibers make them effective filtration materials for air and liquid filtration applications. They can be used to remove particulate matter, bacteria, or pollutants from air or water streams in applications such as respiratory masks, water filtration membranes, and protective clothing.
