Description

Hydrazoic acid (HN3) is a highly reactive and volatile compound with the chemical formula HN₃. It is a simple azide, consisting of one hydrogen atom bound to a linear chain of three nitrogen atoms. Hydrazoic acid is a colorless, highly volatile, and explosive liquid at room temperature. It has a pungent odor similar to acetic acid. The acid and its salts (azides) are of great importance in organic and inorganic chemistry due to their high reactivity and potential as precursors for nitrogen-rich compounds. Hydrazoic acid and its salts, such as lead azide or silver azide, are highly sensitive explosives that are used as primary explosives in detonators and blasting caps. The instability and rapid decomposition of azides make them suitable for initiating explosions.
