MMT-N3 (Azide functional montmorillonite) refers to montmorillonite clay that has been chemically modified with azide groups (-N3). Montmorillonite has a 2:1 layered structure, comprising one octahedral alumina sheet sandwiched between two tetrahedral silica sheets. The layers are negatively charged due to isomorphous substitution, and the charge is balanced by interlayer cations. This structure allows for the intercalation of various molecules and ions into the interlayer spaces. MMT-N3 can be used as a reinforcing filler in polymer nanocomposites to improve mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties. The azide groups on the clay surface allow for covalent bonding with alkyne-functionalized polymers via click chemistry, enhancing the interfacial adhesion between the clay and polymer matrix. In addition, MMT-N3 can be incorporated into hydrogels used in tissue engineering to provide structural support and enhance the mechanical properties of the gels. The azide groups on MMT-N3 can be used to cross-link with alkyne-functionalized polymers or peptides, creating hydrogels with tunable mechanical properties and bioactive functionalities.
