N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (D-GlcNAc / 2-Acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose) is a monosaccharide with a structure similar to glucose, but with an acetyl group (-COCH3) attached to the nitrogen atom in place of the hydroxyl group on the second carbon. This acetyl group is what distinguishes it from D-glucose. GlcNAc is used in the study of glycosylation patterns on glycoproteins and glycolipids.
