Description

N3-LacNAc, also known as azido-lactosamine, is a derivative of lactosamine that has been functionalized with an azide group. Lactosamine, a disaccharide composed of galactose and N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), is an important component of glycoconjugates, such as glycoproteins and glycolipids. N3-LacNAc can be incorporated into glycans in living cells through metabolic labeling. Cells metabolize the azide-modified monosaccharide and incorporate it into their glycoconjugates, allowing for subsequent bioorthogonal tagging with probes or dyes via click chemistry. By attaching imaging agents (such as fluorescent dyes or radiolabels) to N3-LacNAc through click chemistry, researchers can develop targeted imaging probes for detecting specific glycan structures in biological tissues or for use in molecular imaging techniques like PET, MRI, or fluorescence microscopy.
