N3-PEG-MAL (Azide-PEG-MAL, Azide-PEG-Maleimide, Azido-PEG-Maleimide) is a chemical compound used in bioconjugation and molecular biology research. An azide group (-N3) is a chemical functional group consisting of three nitrogen atoms. Azides are known for their ability to react selectively with alkynes through a copper-catalyzed reaction known as the Huisgen cycloaddition or “click chemistry.” Mal stands for maleimide, which is a chemical functional group commonly used in bioconjugation reactions. Maleimides react specifically with thiol (-SH) groups found in cysteine residues of proteins and other thiol-containing molecules, forming covalent bonds known as thioethers.
