PEG-b-PS-b-PNIPAM-b-PDMAEMA (Poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(styrene)-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-b-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)) ntegrates the unique properties of each segment, making it useful for applications in drug delivery, responsive materials, nanotechnology, and gene delivery. The PNIPAM segment is thermoresponsive, meaning it changes its solubility in water based on temperature. Below its LCST (~32°C), it is hydrophilic and soluble in water; above this temperature, it becomes hydrophobic and precipitates out of solution. This unique property allows the copolymer to respond to temperature changes. The PDMAEMA segment is pH-responsive and can change its solubility in water based on pH. Under acidic conditions, it becomes protonated and hydrophilic; under basic conditions, it becomes deprotonated and hydrophobic. This property allows the copolymer to respond to pH changes.
