TCO-protein refers to a protein that has been chemically modified with a trans-cyclooctene (TCO) group. The trans-cyclooctene (TCO) group is usually attached to specific amino acids in the protein, typically through covalent bonding to surface-exposed residues such as lysines, cysteines, or terminal groups. TCO-modified antibodies can be conjugated to tetrazine-linked drug molecules, enabling site-specific delivery of the drug to the target tissue or cell. They can also be incorporated into nanoparticles or other drug carriers via tetrazine chemistry. This allows for the development of systems that deliver proteins or protein-drug conjugates to specific cell types or disease sites (e.g., cancer cells).
