Dense Silica Coated Upconverting Nanoparticles (Dense SiO2 UCNPs) consist of an upconverting nanoparticle core (usually composed of rare-earth elements or ions) and a dense silica shell surrounding the core. This dense silica shell is typically thicker than the mesoporous silica shell mentioned in the previous responses. They can convert low-energy near-infrared (NIR) light into higher-energy visible or ultraviolet light through upconversion luminescence. This property allows for deep-tissue imaging, as NIR light can penetrate biological tissues more effectively than visible or UV light.
