Silica-Coated Upconverting Nanoparticles (Silica-Coated UCNPs). Upconverting nanoparticles are able to convert near-infrared, low-energy radiations into visible, high-energy radiations via a nonlinear optical process. These particles have diverse properties such as large anti-Stokes shifts, high resistance to photobleaching, long-lived luminescence, and sharp emission bands. Adding a coating of silica to the outer surface of upconverting nanoparticles improves these remarkable materials further by making them more chemically stable and significantly less cytotoxic than unmodified particles. In addition, the silica surface can easily be modified to introduce functional groups via salinization, which facilitates conjugations with other biological molecules for synergetic therapeutics or multimodal imaging.
