21H,23H-Porphine, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-iodophenyl)- belongs to the class of tetraphenyl porphyrins where all four phenyl groups are substituted with iodine atoms. Porphyrins and their derivatives have been extensively studied for their applications in photodynamic therapy (PDT), a treatment for cancer and certain other medical conditions. When irradiated with light of an appropriate wavelength, porphyrins can generate reactive oxygen species that selectively destroy cancer cells or pathogens. The iodophenyl substituents may enhance the photodynamic properties or targeting specificity of the porphyrin derivative.
